Course Title: Introduction to Geospatial Information Systems.


Description: This is a hands-on learning experience for IT Faculty. No previous experience is required. In this course, you will learn the basic concepts of using GIS to organize and present spatial data; how to make maps, carry out spatial analysis, and build and edit spatial databases in the context of realistic projects. The textbook, Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop for ArcGIS 10, a best seller since its original publication in 2001, is a hands-on workbook for beginners. It comes with a free 180-day trial version of the software, and a CD containing all exercise data to be used in this course.

George Jackson has been teaching community college students for 26 years, 16 years for Brookhaven College (Dallas) and the rest at Collin College. He has a Master's Degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). He holds two graduate certificates in Geospatial Information Systems from UTD. He is all-but-dissertation for his PhD in Geospatial Information Systems, also from UTD. He and his wife, Mary, have 5 children (all grown), and 10 grandchildren.
